The School for the Blind was established in 1881 to attend to the needs of blind learners that were not catered for satisfactorily at the time by more mainstream academic institutions. A need for after school placement was identified in 1933, when three blind matriculants struggled to find gainful employment. Today, the Industries provide employment opportunities to over 160 visually impaired adults in six different factories. The name was formally changed to the Pioneer School for the visually impaired in 1981 to reflect the school’s growing educational capacity. To empower persons who are blind, partially sighted or deafblind, including visually impaired persons with additional disabilities by means of education, training, development and care towards a fulfilled life and complete citizenship. Improve the quality of life of visually impaired, and other, older persons by providing full-time caring services within a home environment. Offer employment opportunities to visually impaired persons, as well as promoting independence through job placement. Maintain and regularly manage an efficient marketing strategy. Initiate and participate in outreach programmes and supportive ventures related to visual impairments. Contribute financially towards the services that Pioneer School and Pioneer Printers provide to visually impaired persons. Assessment of individual needs and identifying of skills, to increase self-worth, independence and strengthened self-respect. further support by a medical docter weekly and a therapist, ensures that the physical needs of the residents receive regular attention. Providing a safe and hygienic environment: Occupational Health and Security Officer controls safety procedures. Safety Committee and Emergency team and First Aid training to employees. Consultation with families about behavioural problems and deviations. Liaise continuously with family and friends to prevent isolation. Kaleidoscope SA offers adults that became blind at a later stage of their lives continued learning through education and training classes. Our Apple training to the public will commence during the first week of September and this year we will focus on IOS only. Kaleidoscope offers orientation and mobility training upon request, if so required, to help you navigate through the streets of Worcester.
